Answers to the most common questions. The app’s interface is in German, so menu names are given in German with a translation. If something is missing, feel free to write.

How do I change the form (MHP, mild PKU, classic PKU)?

Go to Einstellungen → Person → Form (Settings → Person → Form). The form decides which information appears first in the “Wissen” (knowledge) tab. All other features are the same for every form, and your values stay unchanged when you switch.

If you don’t know the form yet, choose “Weiß ich nicht genau” (not sure). It is usually stated in the letter from your metabolic centre.

How do I adjust the limits for the traffic light?

In Einstellungen → Grenzwerte (Settings → Limits), use plus and minus to set the upper limit of the target range and the warning limit. Enter the values your metabolic centre gives you.

The defaults are 360 µmol/l (about 6 mg/dl) and 600 µmol/l (about 10 mg/dl). “Standardwerte wiederherstellen” (restore defaults) takes you back to them. Changed limits apply immediately to all values, including older ones.

Can I switch between mg/dl and µmol/l?

Yes. Change the display unit in Einstellungen → Anzeige (Settings → Display). When entering a value, you can choose the unit for each value separately, just as it appears in the lab report. The app converts (1 mg/dl is about 60.5 µmol/l).

How do I transfer values via CSV, for example from Excel?

Export: Einstellungen → Als CSV exportieren (export as CSV). The share sheet lets you save the file, send it via AirDrop or email it. The file contains the date, the value in µmol/l and mg/dl, and the note.

Import: Einstellungen → CSV importieren (import CSV). PheLog reads its own export and simple tables with the date in the first column and the value in the second, for example from Excel or Numbers. If the header row names the unit (“µmol” or “mg”), the app detects it; otherwise it uses the display unit you have set. Duplicate entries are skipped. Before importing, the app shows how many values it found.

The Apple Watch shows no values or old ones. What can I do?

Open PheLog once on your iPhone. The watch gets the history from the paired iPhone, so the app needs to have run there at least once.

Values you enter on the watch go straight to the iPhone when it is nearby. Otherwise the watch keeps them and shows “noch nicht auf dem iPhone” (not yet on iPhone). As soon as both devices are connected again, they are sent. On the iPhone these values appear with the note “Apple Watch”.

How do I back up my data? What happens when I get a new iPhone?

The values are part of your normal iPhone backup (iCloud backup or a backup on your computer). If you set up a new iPhone from a backup, your values are back.

For an extra copy, or to move without a backup, use the CSV export and import the file on the new device. There is deliberately no separate cloud service.

What do the colours mean?

Green means in target range, that is up to the upper target limit. Orange means elevated: above that, but not above the warning limit. Red means above the warning limit. You set the limits yourself. The colours are a guide; your metabolic centre assesses the values.

Does PheLog give advice on diet or treatment?

No. PheLog is a diary for keeping records. It gives no advice on diet, dosage or treatment and does not replace medical advice. The texts in the “Wissen” tab are general information with sources.

What does PheLog cost, and which devices do I need?

PheLog is free, with no subscription, no in-app purchases and no ads. It runs on iPhone with iOS 17 or later and on Apple Watch with watchOS 10 or later. There is no Android version.

Please don’t attach lab reports or values. For a bug report, the iOS version, the device and a short description of what happened are enough.
